New Minimum Wage: Organised private sector not part of NLC, TUC strike – NECA

The Nigeria Labour Congress directed all its members and affiliate unions to commence a nationwide strike on Thursday (today), 27th September, 2018.

According to The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, the industrial strike was to commence as a result of the Federal Government refusal to reconvene the meeting of the tripartite national minimum wage committee to enable it to conclude its work. He said, “In compliance with this mandate, all workers and private sector at all levels across the country have been directed to comply.

“All public and private institutions, offices, banks, schools, public and private business premises, including filling station, are to remain shut till further notice,” Wabba said at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

The workers are demanding a new minimum wage of about N50,000 from the current national minimum wage of N18,000.

Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, on the other hand has said the organised private sector is not part of strike action by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Unions Congress, TUC.

Director-General of NECA, Timothy Olawale, made this known in a letter to all members of the association, which was sighted by DAILY POST in Abuja late Wednesday.

He said the leadership of national labour unions had assured NECA that the private sector was not the target of the industrial action but the government.

Against the background, Olawale, therefore, urged the employers to sensitize their workers to the effect that the private sector has no scores to settle with the unions as such not part of the strike action.

The letter reads in part: “We have been in constant touch with the leadership of labour unions and have been assured the target of the strike action is not the private sector but the government and its institution.

“In the light of the feedback that we have received from NLC and TUC, we advise members to sensitise their workers to the effect that the private sector has no problem with the unions, as such not the target of the industrial action.”

The NLC and the TUC on Thursday embarked on a warning strike to protest perceived government complicity in the delay on the conclusion of works by the National Minimum Wage Committee.

Meanwhile, Ngige on the other hand told journalists after a meeting with labour leaders that the tripartite committee on national minimum wage would resume negotiations on October 4.

“We are resuming precisely on Thursday, October 4, and the meeting can spill over to October 5. All the processes have been put in place and labour leaders know; they are now expected to communicate such to their organs; so we don’t have any need for a strike,” he said.

South Africa detains Russian ship allegedly bringing illegal weapons to Lagos

South African police on Thursday said they had boarded a Russian-registered cargo ship allegedly carrying illegal weapons and explosives en route to Lagos, Nigeria.

The vessel, named Lada, had reportedly left Madagascar before stopping at Ngqura port outside the eastern city of Port Elizabeth, where it was detained after a security check on Sunday.

“We are aware that she has dangerous cargo — explosives and weapons — on board,” Olwethu Mdabula, spokeswoman for the Transnet state transport company told AFP.

She declined to give further details.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, spokesman for the Hawks police investigative unit, confirmed to AFP that the vessel was carrying weapons.

“This is a very, very sensitive matter. It is receiving attention,” he said.

Local reports said police had searched the vessel after an anonymous tip-off and found weapons and explosives worth about $3.5 million in 20 containers on board.

Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo sacks DSS Boss, Lawal Daura

Nigeria’s acting president Yemi Osinbajo has sacked the director-general of the country’s secret service following the service’s operatives blockade of the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Masked operatives of the Department of State Services earlier on Tuesday prevented lawmakers, staff and journalists from entering the National Assembly.

Opposition lawmakers accused the ruling all Progressives Congress of being behind the blockade which saw the lawmakers locked out of their offices. The clerk of the National Assembly was also refused entry to the Assembly complex.

Daura, who was summoned to the presidential villa by the acting president few minutes before his sack, was directed to hand over to the most senior officer of the DSS until further notice.

“Acting Yemi Osinbajo has directed the termination of the appointment of the DG of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Musa Daura,” said Laolu Akande, media aide to Osinbajo.

“Mr. Daura has been directed to hand over to the most senior officer of the State Security Service until further notice.”

Osinbajo also described the unauthorized takeover of the National Assembly complex as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.

He said the unlawful act which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency is condemnable and completely unacceptable.

“Prof. Osinbajo is consequently assuring Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.”

Facebook recently started asking banks for your financial data Rachel Kaser

A report from the Wall Street Journal today revealed Facebook was attempting to gain detailed financial information from its users’ banks. Oof, in how many languages can I say “no?”

According to the Journal, Facebook has approached the likes of Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, and Citigroup with an eye toward partnership. In exchange for users’ banking data, it proposed to offer a bank’s customers the ability to conduct business within Facebook itself.

In response, a company spokesperson told TNW any reports it had requested transaction data weren’t true, and the company asked for the partnership in order to incorporate banking chatbots into the Messenger app:

Like many online companies with commerce businesses, we partner with banks and credit card companies to offer services like customer chat or account management. The idea is that messaging with a bank can be better than waiting on hold over the phone – and it’s completely opt-in. We’re not using this information beyond enabling these types of experiences – not for advertising or anything else.

Given what we know about Facebook‘s approach to consumer data, just from the last year or so, I think I’ll take a 20-minute phone wait over giving them my banking details.

We’re not even six months out from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which the press blew the lid off a series of in-house mishaps involving users’ personal data finding its way into malicious hands — or at least having the potential to find its way to them. These data privacy scandals appeared to be at least one major catalyst behind Facebook‘s precipitous plunge on the stock market at the end of last month.

Facebook has also never denied that it gathers a truly dizzying amount of data on its users. And now it wants that information to include banking data? Even if that doesn’t include info on all transactions, it’s more than a little scary to think of Facebook — whose name in this sphere is basically mud — having access to that data.

For what it’s worth, the banks might not be open to the idea. A spokesperson for Wells Fargo told NY Daily News: “Maintaining the privacy of customer data is of paramount importance to Wells Fargo. We are not actively engaged in data-sharing conversations with Facebook.”

After 13 years at CNN Isha Sesay, has announced her exit from the organisation. She broke the news via her twitter handle, @IamIshaSesay on Wednesday.

Speaking on the reason for her exit in an interview with Whatweseeee, Sesay said, “It’s an exciting time for me — and a nerve-wracking one,”. In her words, “I’m writing a book about the Chibok girls, it’s being released in May 2019. It really speaks to where my head is at, currently — a lot more coverage about Africa, a lot more work on the continent, and a lot more focus on young girls. That’s what I’m about right now.”

She also revealed her frustration with Western media, which is focused on US President Trump, “it’s all so Trump-focused,” she explains. “He sucked all of the oxygen out of the room. The media is following that lead to the exclusion of almost everything else, in a meaningful way. For me, personally, it’s not what I want to spend all my time doing.”

“After a while, I want to do more coverage of the Ebola outbreak, of the elections in Liberia, or any number of things that are happening. I’m ready to take control of what I’m talking about,” Sesay added.

Her news got her followers on twitter talking with many wishing her well in her future endeavours.

Sesay is a British born journalist of Sierra Leonean descent, not Nigerian as we all thought.

Ugandan Women Fight Lazy Husbands With $6 'Sex Tax' by Godfrey Olukya

© Glenn Harvey for OZY Schoolteacher

Annet Nanozi was mad at her husband. A vehicle mechanic, he was refusing to help raise their four children. She realized he was instead spending his paycheck on alcohol and his time sleeping with barmaids. The 34-year-old decided to teach her husband a lesson. Now, when he comes home and wants sex, he needs to pay her first.

It’s a controversial strategy, but it’s picking up across Uganda, as increasingly emboldened women — backed by rights organizations — battle a patriarchal society where responsibilities and moral norms are both skewed against them. What started out with isolated instances in the capital, Kampala, has exploded into a tactic more and more Ugandan women are employing to get their husbands to pay up for household expenses and atone for refusing to take on home chores.

Three years ago, 150 women first reported demanding money from their husbands for sex to the Mothers Union, an Anglican organization that has been in Uganda for more than a century, says the body’s secretary, Ruth Nalugwa. That number increased to 5,000 by 2016, and now more than 30,000 women have reported employing the strategy, she says. The actual number of wives charging their husbands for sex may be greater, says Stella Muyana, the chairperson of Bakazibano, a Ugandan women’s rights organization. But her organization has recorded more than 31,000 cases, she says. In May, Uganda’s government-owned newspaper, The New Vision, reported on how what “started as a joke” is now “a reality''.

The spread of this practice is dividing Ugandan society. Some husbands have agreed to pay up, and a few have turned more responsible toward their families. Others have refused to pay for sex, and in some instances, demands from wives have spiraled into domestic violence — and even occasional deaths. Some religious leaders and government ministers have weighed in against the practice, calling it immoral and irreligious.

But most women and rights organizations are supporting the strategy, arguing that any approach that gets irresponsible husbands to contribute toward the welfare of their families is justified. After all, it took hunger strikes and arson attacks from the suffragettes in the U.K. to drive a national conversation about voting rights for women.

“If the men are irresponsible and it is the only way their wives can get money from them to run the homes, let them go ahead and tax sex,” says Tina Musuya, a leading women’s rights activist and executive director of the nonprofit Centre for Domestic Violence Prevention (CEDOVIP).

For many women, the penalty or tax is as much about respect as it is about money. To Beatrice Atim, a vendor at Masaka market, 120 kilometers west of Kampala, it’s in part a way to get her husband to stop taking her for granted. Her husband, she says, would leave for work early in the morning, often without giving her money for expenses and expecting her to perform all household chores. After hearing about other women charging their husbands for sex, she decided to try it too. She demands that he pay 10,000 shillings ($3) if he wants her to have sex with him. It worked. “He accepted and he pays me without any quarrel because he knows that the money is to be used at home,” she says.
But in other cases, the response from husbands has been more complex. Thomas Owori, a taxi driver in the eastern town of Tororo, says he first refused to pay his wife for sex and even slapped her when she demanded money. Slowly though, he understood her reasons and gave in, he says. He now pays his wife 20,000 shillings ($6) each time they have sex.

To Philip Byabasaija, a shop attendant in Kampala, it’s unacceptable for a wife to charge her husband for sex. When his wife demanded money, he says he beat her up — and she gave up on the idea. “That is stupid. How can my wife charge me for sex?” he asks, indignantly.

Such is the prevalence — and acceptability — of wife beating in Uganda, that a recent survey found that 49 percent of Ugandan women justified husbands hitting them on one ground or another. That same survey found 18 percent of women saying it was understandable for husbands to hit their wives if they refused to have sex.

Women’s organizations know the scales are loaded against wives. The Mothers Union is trying to tutor women, through its branches across the country, to first explain to their husbands that the demands are in the family’s interests — and not a challenge to men, says Rebecca Nakwayi, chairperson of a Kampala branch of the organization.

But Uganda’s minister of ethics and integrity, Reverend Father Simon Lokodo, is against the growing practice. Sex with his wife is a man’s right, according to him. Denying a husband sex is unfair, says Lokodo. “Why should wives charge for sex in order to get economic gains?” he asks. To him, the practice shows “that moral fibers have gone so low.”

Activists like Musuya, though, are clear that if anything, it’s unfair to expect a woman to enjoy sex with a man who doesn’t pay the family’s bills. And Nanozi, the teacher, is confident she’s doing the right thing. Her husband, she says, had stopped paying even for the family’s food supplies. Not anymore.

Top 10 worst countries to raise children and start a family- Nigeria Included

So, I was going through some news and gist online (powered by Microsoft), I bumped into an article by #womensarticle.com. In this article, Nigeria was listed as 10th of the 10 worst countries to raise kids and start a family and the image below was used to depict Nigeria.

First, I find it very insulting as a mother that Nigeria should even feature in such contents. See link  http://www.womensarticle.com/the-10-worst-countries-to-raise-kids-a-family/10/
Yes, I agree that some schools in Nigeria especially in the undeveloped or underdeveloped parts of the country may not have the standard of education required but generalizing it is very wrong.

Every country and continent no matter how developed, be it America, China, United Kingdom etc have areas where their wealth and development strategies do not reach or favor so, it is very wrong to make such assumptions. If the writer has been to Nigeria, what part of Nigeria did you go to?

It is high time we put an end to such derogatory statements. We do not claim to be the best but you can't enlist us as a country where children should not be bred and even going as far as ranking us the 5th most dangerous country to live in, 8th worst healthcare system blah blah blah.

We really need to address all these misrepresentations and lies.

#womensarticle this is soo wrong.

Combating Plastic Pollution

Imagine waking up to a very clean environment void of plastic bottles, pure water sachets, paper bags and all; your guess is as good as mine "breathe of fresh air".

Here is the fact, we are all responsible for the pollution we face today. In as much as we blame the government for not putting the right policies or solutions in place to resolve this issue but this decay all emanated from everyone of us.

Now, let us be frank; how much bottled or sachet water do you consume on a daily basis? Now multiply that by the number of people nationwide; because one way or another, we all consume these items. Once done with these items, how do you dispose them off?

These items when thrown out eventually end up somewhere and when we experience heavy downpours, they keep traveling until they finally settle in our canals. Yes! That is how they find their ways into our gutters or canals and ocean. We endanger wildlife, pollute our water, and put our health at risk if we do not reduce our use of plastic.

Do you know that about 8.8 million tons of plastic trash flow into the ocean each year? Just a little change in our daily routine can help us fight against this toxic waste.

Here are a few tips to help us

  1. Say No to Plastic Packaging: Most of us enjoy our smoothie, fruit salad, ice cream, fast food and so on in those very cute plastic packaged containers but it's time to bid that habit goodbye. How about you using re-usable plates, cups, straws, shopping bags, water bottles etc. How about your kids choosing those cute cones over the plastic cups for ice cream? Great, right?.
  2. Matches Over Lighters: Everyone loves anything pretty and fancy but for our health it's best we settle for things that are less harmful to us. If you need to start a fire, be it your gas, candle sticks or camp fire, consider using matches rather than the plastic lighters.
  3. Recycling: Do you know plastic bottles take up to 450 years to decompose? The best way to rid ourselves of them is by recycling. Ensure to dispose your refuse appropriately before handing them over to the garbage companies or look out for recycling companies around you for ease.
  4. Educate Others: Share your knowledge with your children, family and neighbors. This is one of the fastest ways to end this pollution in our society. Your kid could talk another kid out of this habit in school; you never can tell.

Together, let us keep our environment clean and say No to plastic pollution.

Introducing the World’s First Alcoholic Coca-Cola Drink

Coca-Cola has unveiled an alcoholic drink for the first time in its 125-year history.

The drinks giant launched a fizzy lemon flavoured alcopop in Japan yesterday – aimed at young women. The three drinks range from three per cent to eight per cent alcohol in a bid to cash-in on the growing market of young drinkers.

The three new ‘Lemon-Do’ drinks are available in the southern Kyushu region of Japan. A 350 ml can will set customers back 150 yen, which is around £1.

The recipes are a closely guarded secret but the drinks are modelled on the country’s popular Chu-Hi drinks which are a mix of local spirit and fruit flavors.

Chu-Hi - an abbreviation for shochu highball - has been marketed as an alternative to beer and has proved popular with female drinkers. The most popular flavors are strong citrus ones such as grapefruit or lemon. Japanese brands like Suntory, Asahi and Kirin currently dominate the sector for canned Chu-Hi drinks.

Coca-Cola says there are no plans to bring the new drinks range to markets outside Japan.

Masaki Iida, spokesman for Coca-Cola’s Japanese unit, said: “This is a pilot project in the region which has a sizeable market,’

Alcopops boomed in Europe and the UK in the 1990s with the likes of Smirnoff Ice, Hooper’s Hooch and Two Dogs dominating the market.

However, the drinks proved controversial with critics claiming they encouraged young people to drink alcohol due to their sugary taste.

In the autumn of 1996, the then Chancellor Kenneth Clarke increased the tax on them by 40 per cent.

Lagos State government reduces the controversial Land Use Charge

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state has reduced the rates of the land use charge following widespread criticism.

The government had reviewed the rates upward, charging property solely occupied by the owner for residential purpose at the rate of 0.076 percent per annum; property occupied by the owner and tenant(s) or third parties at 0.256 percent per annum; while investment property fully occupied by tenants or third party(ies) for revenue generation at 0.76 percent per annum.

It also threatened to penalize those who do not make payment after receiving notice. Failure to pay between 45 and 75 days attracted 50 percent increase; after 105 days, a 100 percent increase. The law prescribed that a property shall be liable to enforcement if payment is not made after 135 days of notice.

However, at a press conference in Alausa, Ikeja today, Akinyemi Ashade, commissioner of finance, said commercial property owners would get 50 percent discount. Owner-occupier 25 percent, while there would be waiver for late payment and tax credit for those who are prompt in payment.

Payment in instalment was also introduced in the new arrangement. The government took the action after the pressure from individuals, pressure groups and civil society organisations (CSOs).
